Wang Wang: Protecting Her Puppies at The Cost of Her Life
Wang Wang, a stray mother dog in China, was recently brutally killed on the street by a group of young boys. People around the world are seeking justice for this horrible killing after videos of the act spread online worldwide (ABC News).
What Happened to Wang Wang?
In June 2026, Wang Wang, a mother dog, was killed by five young boys in the street. This was not because she had done anything wrong. She was simply a stray mother dog protecting her puppies.
The Taiwanese media platform ETtoday covered the story, explaining how the five boys were “messing around” in an abandoned vacant lot and began to beat Wang Wang and her puppies with sticks while recording the entire act. They killed her puppies and then turned their attention to Wang Wang, who was barking incessantly and trying to protect them. They laughed and prodded her, beating her until she was covered in blood. The boys then poured gasoline on her and set her on fire as she ran around in panic, pushing her away as she burned (ETtoday).

On top of this horrendous act, the boys not only recorded it but also posted it online, with the videos going viral and sparking outrage from the public.
A Public Outcry for Justice
The video and news of this attack were spread all over social media, reaching people in the UK and the United States. People shared the news and began putting up billboards in cities to call for justice for Wang Wang. Seeing seeing how the boys had fun torturing the poor puppies and dog shocked people around the world.
They were especially angry because, after all of the public response, the boys would not be charged “because there is no law in China protecting animal welfare” (ABC News). In the end, they were only sent to “special schools for education,” and the town government appealed to the public not to disseminate related videos and photos.
ABC News mentions that, after a few weeks of criticism over the lack of action and the media explosion demanding that animal rights be taken seriously in China, Chinese social media platforms removed and censored anything related to the topic.
When Cruelty Becomes Normalized
What happened to Wang Wang raises a much larger question about how violence toward animals is treated in society. This was not an accident. These boys deliberately chose to hurt these dogs, who were completely defenseless. They beat Wang Wang and her puppies, filmed the violence, and then shared it online. The disturbing part is not only that the violence happened, but that the boys were able to treat the suffering of these animals as entertainment.
Animal cruelty is often dismissed because the victims are animals, but violence does not become less violent simply because the victim cannot speak for themselves. This is the case for ALL animals, not just dogs. This story forces us to ask why violence against animals can happen so easily and why there are so few legal protections for them in so many countries.
