Governance and policies / Code of Ethics Policy

Code of Ethics

The ethical standards that guide everyone who works or volunteers with the Foundation.

1. Purpose

The Humane Choices Foundation (the Organization) exists to advance the wellbeing of animals, advocate for a vegan and plant-based world, and support environmental justice. This Code of Ethics defines the foundational values and ethical principles that guide how the Organization conducts itself, makes decisions, and fulfills its mission.

This Code sits above all other policies. Where questions arise that are not answered by a specific policy, individuals are expected to act in a manner consistent with the principles set out here. It is not a compliance checklist but a living expression of who the Organization is and how it operates in the world.

2. Scope

This Code applies to all individuals who act on behalf of the Organization, including Board members, staff, volunteers, contractors, and any other person representing the Organization in any capacity.

3. Our Ethical Foundation

The Organization's ethical commitments flow from a core belief: that all sentient beings have inherent value and that humans have a responsibility to act with compassion, restraint, and justice toward animals, toward each other, and toward the natural world. Everything the Organization does should reflect that belief.

4. Respect for Animals

The Organization is unequivocally committed to the protection and welfare of animals. In all its programs, communications, partnerships, and internal operations, the Organization will:

  • Refuse to participate in, fund, or endorse activities that cause unnecessary harm or suffering to animals
  • Advocate for the reduction and elimination of animal exploitation in all its forms, including in food systems, entertainment, research, and the clothing industry
  • Apply an animal welfare lens to all organizational decisions, including procurement, catering, events, and vendor relationships
  • Treat any animal that comes into the Organization's care with the highest standard of welfare and compassion

Individuals associated with the Organization are not required to be vegan in their personal lives as a condition of participation. However, all are expected to act with respect for the Organization's mission and to avoid conduct that is publicly and materially contrary to the Organization's animal welfare commitments.

5. Integrity and Honesty

The Organization holds itself to the highest standard of truthfulness in all its communications, advocacy, and operations. This means:

  • Representing facts, research, and evidence accurately and without distortion
  • Acknowledging uncertainty, complexity, and the limits of available evidence rather than overstating claims
  • Being transparent with donors, supporters, and the public about how resources are used and what outcomes have been achieved
  • Correcting errors promptly and publicly when the Organization has communicated inaccurate information
  • Refusing to use manipulative, misleading, or emotionally exploitative tactics, even in service of a worthy cause

The credibility of the Organization's advocacy depends entirely on its reputation for honesty. That reputation is everyone's responsibility to protect.

6. Compassion and Non-Violence

Compassion is at the centre of everything the Organization does. The Organization rejects violence and advocates for change through education, community-building, and constructive dialogue. All individuals associated with the Organization are expected to:

  • Engage with others, including those who disagree, with patience, respect, and a genuine desire to be understood
  • Avoid language or conduct that demeans, threatens, or targets individuals, even where the Organization strongly opposes their actions or views
  • Approach advocacy with a focus on reducing harm rather than assigning blame
  • Model the values of a more compassionate world in how they treat the people around them

The Organization recognizes that individuals come to animal welfare and veganism through many different paths and at many different points in their lives. A non-judgmental, welcoming approach to those who are not yet aligned with the Organization's full mission is both ethically important and strategically effective.

7. Environmental Responsibility

The Organization recognizes that animal welfare, food systems, and environmental health are deeply interconnected. In fulfilling its environmental mandate, the Organization commits to:

  • Minimizing its own environmental footprint in operations, events, and communications
  • Prioritizing suppliers, vendors, and partners whose practices reflect environmental responsibility
  • Advocating for food systems, land use policies, and consumer practices that reduce harm to ecosystems and non-human species
  • Applying an environmental justice lens to its work, recognizing that the communities most affected by environmental harm are often also the most marginalized

8. Equity, Inclusion, and Justice

The Organization believes that justice for animals and justice for people are inseparable. Speciesism, racism, sexism, ableism, and all other systems of oppression share common roots, and the Organization is committed to challenging all of them. In practice, this means:

  • Actively working to ensure that the Organization's leadership, programs, and communications reflect the diversity of the communities it serves
  • Listening to and centering the voices of marginalized communities, including in decisions about how animal welfare and environmental advocacy is framed and conducted
  • Refusing to use imagery, language, or arguments that trivialize human suffering in the service of animal welfare arguments
  • Creating an internal culture where difference is welcomed and where every person is treated with dignity regardless of race, gender, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic

9. Responsible Stewardship

The Organization holds its resources in trust for the animals, communities, and causes it serves. All who have authority over organizational resources are expected to:

  • Use funds, assets, and the Organization's name exclusively for purposes that advance its charitable mission
  • Apply sound judgment in spending decisions and err on the side of restraint and necessity
  • Disclose and manage conflicts of interest in accordance with the Conflict of Interest Policy
  • Never use organizational resources, relationships, or influence for personal gain
  • Maintain the kind of financial transparency that earns and keeps public trust

10. Accountability and Courage

Ethics requires more than good intentions. It requires the courage to speak up, to acknowledge mistakes, and to hold both the Organization and oneself accountable when things fall short. The Organization expects everyone associated with it to:

  • Raise concerns when they observe conduct that appears to conflict with this Code or any organizational policy
  • Accept feedback and correction with openness and without defensiveness
  • Acknowledge errors honestly rather than concealing or minimizing them
  • Support a culture in which difficult conversations are welcomed, not avoided

The Organization will never retaliate against any individual who raises a concern in good faith. Raising concerns, even when uncomfortable, is itself an act of ethical integrity.

11. Relationships with External Parties

The Organization's partnerships, sponsorships, and collaborations reflect on its values and credibility. Before entering any significant external relationship, the Organization will consider:

  • Whether the potential partner's practices, products, or public positions are materially consistent with the Organization's mission
  • Whether the relationship could compromise the Organization's independence, credibility, or advocacy positions
  • Whether the benefits of the relationship justify any reputational or ethical risk it may carry

The Organization reserves the right to decline or end any partnership, donation, or collaboration that is inconsistent with this Code, regardless of financial or strategic value.

12. How This Code Is Applied

This Code is not intended to be used as a tool for policing personal choices or targeting individuals. It exists to provide a shared ethical foundation for the Organization's collective work. When questions or concerns arise:

  • Minor misalignments will typically be addressed through conversation and education
  • Repeated or serious breaches may result in formal review under the relevant policy, including the Anti-Harassment and Discrimination Policy, the Whistleblower Policy, or the Volunteer Management Policy
  • The Board of Directors has ultimate responsibility for upholding this Code at the governance level

Individuals who are uncertain whether a particular action is consistent with this Code are encouraged to ask before proceeding rather than after.

13. Annual Review

This Code will be reviewed annually by the Board. All covered individuals will acknowledge having re-read Organization policies, including this Code, at least once annually.
