Billie Eilish is one of many celebrities who is proudly vegan. She has been vegan since the age of 12, and her love for animals and animal rights is strong. She is against any practice that harms animals, and once learning about the way animals are treated, she decided she would never be a part of it.
This past week, there has been a lot of online traction, specifically around a recent “Ask Me Anything” interview for Elle in which Billie Eilish shared her opinion on animal rights. It currently has around 800k views.
During the interview, she stated that “...eating meat is inherently wrong. And then the other thing is, two things cannot coincide: ‘I love animals’, and ‘I eat meat’. You can’t do both, sorry.” This is a very strong message that needs to be said more online by those who advocate for veganism and animal rights. She is challenging those who say: “That baby cow is adorable!”, but then eat a burger: you cannot love animals and then eat them. In doing so, you are supporting the pain and death humans inflict on them in the food and clothing industries.
After this interview, there was backlash online, and Billie decided to speak out and stand by her statement. She urged her community of millions of followers online to wake up to reality, saying that people are living in denial about the horrid treatment of animals. She posted many posts on her story and said: “go watch…some footage of what is done to the animals you claim to love so much.” She then continued by saying: “I am so tired of standing up for/having empathy for living beings being controversial.”

On top of this statement, she posted a series of videos showing the cruelty of animal farming and the meat industry, including graphic videos, one being of a slaughterhouse. To this she wrote: “If that footage was hard for u to watch, I encourage u to pls take a look at urself.”
Billie Eilish has reached thousands of viewers with these posts. This is one of many steps needed for people to realize the cruelty of the food industry. Advocacy and speaking the truth are essential to the cause. Billie Eilish is strong for standing up to unhappy fans. She is right; we cannot say we love animals and yet be aware of the horrors that happen behind closed doors.

Many animal rights organizations like PETA are talking about how important it is for celebrities and people with an audience to advocate for animal rights because they can reach a much larger audience. In New York, PETA has created billboards saying, “Billie Eilish is 100% right. You can’t love animals and eat meat.”
Let’s hope this is the start of a new wave of change. We need to continue to advocate for animal rights. People need to come to the realization that the meat and food they are consuming comes FROM ANIMALS who are forcefully put into a system of terror, pain, and death.
