Horse Collapses and Dies: The Exploitation of Carriage Horses in NYC & The Consequences

Content Warning: This post contains content and images that some may find upsetting

Horse-drawn carriages have existed for centuries, and can go back to early farming communities. However, with modern technology and modes of transportation, horse-drawn carriages have become an entertainment and money-making ploy that is outdated and unnecessary.

In June 2026, there was outcry from animal rights activists after a horse being used to pull carriages in Central Park, collapsed and died. In a news article from the New York Post, published June 9, 2026, author Zoe Hussain states that the horse collapsed, and died 10 minutes later. Children, families, cyclists, tourists, and parkgoers were witnesses to the traumatic event, sparking debate about the ethics surrounding the practice of horse drawn carriages in Central Park. According to the Central Park Horse Carriage website, carriage rides have been occurring since the park's opening in 1858. Therefore, horses have been being exploited and abused in just Central Park alone for over 160 years. Originally, it was just 25 cents per passenger to ride these horse-drawn carriages, a small price to pay for the mistreatment of horses.

This post from PETA showcases the two fatal incidents that occurred in Central Park in June 2026, sparking outcry about the ethics of horse-drawn carriages, and the treatment of the horses.

Unfortunately, this is not the only headline to come out about Central Park's horse-drawn carriages this month. On June 18, 2026, horse drawn carriages in the park were halted after an 18-year old man died following a fall from one of the carriages. The tragic incident has brought more awareness to if these horse-drawn carriages are really necessary, or if they cause more harm than good. Romanch Mahajan, just 18 years old, was visiting from India with his parents and younger brother. The driver of the carriage was taking an image of the family, when the horse bolted. For vegans and animal rights activists, it is no surprise that this horse ran, hoping for freedom and a life free of exploitation. Both the previous incident of the horse collapsing, and now the death of Romanch Mahajan, highlight the physical, mental and emotional distress of these horses who are forced to work. Horses are extremely intelligent animals and deserve to be respected. They should be free in the wild, or living peacefully at an animal sanctuary, not being forced to pull carriages purely for financial gain. Debates surrounding the topic have occurred for decades, and tensions are high following these two incidents in the past month alone. With the indefinite closure of the carriage rides, hopefully people will realize that they are harmful and outdated, and these horses can live the rest of their lives free.
